The Bildungscampus in Heilbronn relies on the "Road to Zero Waste" (RTZW) concept for its waste management. The goal is to minimize the amount of residual waste through systematic waste sorting and to return more materials to the recycling loop.

To objectively evaluate waste generation, waste management is guided by DIN SPEC 91436. This standard provides the framework for transparently recording material flows and optimizing recycling.

This results in the following objectives for the campus:

• Recycling rate: Increasing the proportion of recyclable materials to at least 85%.

• Certification: Achieving the official Bronze status of the RTZW certification upon meeting the quota.

• Cost-efficiency: Reducing disposal costs through lower volumes of residual waste.

In addition, care has been taken to simplify sorting for all user groups by marking disposal stations with standardized color codes and symbols. This visual guidance is designed to overcome language barriers and minimize sorting errors.

The sorting system at the Bildungscampus:

• Residual waste: Proper disposal of non-recyclable materials such as hygiene products or heavily contaminated waste.

• Paper & boxes: Collection point for clean paper products, such as lecture notes & notebooks (without plastic sleeves), exam sheets & scrap paper, envelopes (including those with display windows), and cardboard boxes (folded flat)

• Plastic waste: Collection of lightweight packaging made of plastic, metal, and composite materials. This includes, for example, empty beverage cartons, yogurt cups, aluminum foil, or tin cans.

• Organic waste: Returning organic materials such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, or tea filters back into the biological cycle.

The corresponding waste bins will be found clearly visible and distinctly labeled in all indoor building areas as well as across the entire outdoor grounds.
