On May 5, the official groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Bildungscampus West was celebrated in the presence of Deputy Minister President Thomas Strobl as a new milestone for the future of education and science.
In the coming years, a new quarter will be created here under the motto "The future is being created here", which will contribute to intensive interaction between the campus and the urban space.
With the start of demolition work on the Hofkammer building on the education campus, space is being created for a new 15-storey high-rise building. The innovative building with a gross floor area of 19,700 square meters was designed by the renowned architectural firm Wittfoht Architekten. The Initiative Zukunftsbildung is strengthening the educational landscape with the vision of giving all children in Germany access to a good early education in nurseries and elementary school.
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich is coming to the campus as a top university. The focus is on digital transformation and data science, particularly in artificial intelligence.
The Joint Innovation Hub of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI is moving to the campus and supports organizations with the systemic foresight of trends as well as the effective transformation in the areas of digitization, AI and sustainability.
The extension to the west will double the size of the Bildungscampus site.
In addition to science and research, the area on the other side of the road will also provide space for student accommodation, retail and leisure. Construction will begin with the parking garage and the HIP tower.
The opening of the 42 Heilbronn was celebrated in April. The “Spaceship” of the innovative coding school with French roots is just across the street on the Weipertstraße. The further renovation of the building is already in full swing.
The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new home of the Campus Founders took place in March, at Bildungscampus 11 (currently at home in BC 1). The modern start-up center with space for offices, co-working, catering and events will be built here by mid-2024.
The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN) moved into the last buildings on the Campus Nord this year. Meanwhile a colorful procession made its way along the Campus Mitte in the fall: After a very sporty rebuilding phase, the first school beginners carrying their school cones were greeted on the Campus. The Josef-Schwarz Schule is granted interim premises here.
The new canteen complements the Bildungscampus Mitte and is an absolute eye-catcher: Although positioned in the center of the Bildungscampus, Bildungscampus 8 is an architectural highlight screened by two landscaped mounds.
The canteen offers with daylight and deepset inner courtyard seatings for over 500 guests.
In October, the North Educational Campus, together with buildings 14, 15 and 17 was officially inaugurated. The LIV Library deserves a special mention; it is unique both architecturally and owing to cooperation with various universities nationwide.
In May 2019, the Campus also welcomed the Research and Innovation Center for Cognitive Service Systems (KODIS) of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO); in November 2019, the Ferdinand-Steinbeis-Institute followed. Two powerful research units which immediately grant the field of science a place of importance on the Campus. In the fall, the Erzieherakademie Heilbronn (Academy for Early Childhood Educators) joined the educational family on the Campus too.
On 31st January, the 'tower building' was inaugurated on the Bildungscampus. In addition to the lecture and seminar rooms of the Technical University of Munich, the building provides urgently needed office space. The Dieter Schwarz Foundation as well as the Schwarz Campus Service (SCS) can also be found at Bildungscampus 9. The central information desk and reception are located on the ground floor.
Simultaneously, the rapid growth of the educational establishments in terms of the numbers of students and buildings makes ever-increasing challenges on the hitherto de-central building and administration coordination. As such, a new company is founded: The Schwarz Campus Service is responsible for all services related to the construction, operation and administration of the real estate and of the event locations.
Simultaneously demolitions and new constructions make headway. About 11,000 square meters of gross surface area housing 80 rooms and numerous lecture rooms are built at Bildungscampus 9 alone. 153,000 bricks are used in the construction.
In October, the Technical University of Munich was the first university to move into the Bildungscampus Heilbronn. The awarding of the title of “University City of Heilbronn” followed shortly afterwards at the beginning of 2020. The Campus Founders – as the entrepreneurship and innovation center initiated by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation – now also enriches the Campus.
In June, 2017, the campus bridge measuring 125 meters in length and weighing 280 tons was finished. It spans over the railroad tracks and connects the Campus Ost with the Campus Mitte and Campus Nord. In addition, another chapter begins for the Campus as an educational location: negotiations between the Dieter Schwarz Foundation and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), School of Management prove successful.
On 25th October, the inauguration of "Bildungscampus Nord" was celebrated: The first buildings of the third construction phase has been opened by the Minister for Education, Theresia Bauer. The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN) as well as the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Heilbronn (DHBW HN) Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) moved into buildings 12 and 13 in today’s Bildungscampus Nord. The infrastructure also follows suit and the Parkhaus Mitte finds its home on the site.
The City of Heilbronn is enriched by the AULA, a state-of-the-art event and conference center. More than 500 seats on over 1,500 square meters offer floor space for specialist congresses, events for those studying or for show events.
On 30th September, the first part of today’s Bildungscampus Mitte has been formally inaugurated by the Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann. The site now extends beyond the railroad tracks thanks to the AULA and aim buildings.
Even the capacity of the 'old' canteen, which could cater for 380 meals a day, is no longer sufficient. Therefore, the FORUM is used as an interim extension of the canteen. As a result of growth, another relocation starts: The Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Heilbronn (DHBW HN) moves into the aim building, and aim relocates to the newly erected Bildungscampus 7 in the Gaswerkstraße.
Whilst the construction works proceed, the decisions of the previous year become official: On 1st July, 2014, the Minister for Education, Theresia Bauer, officially proclaims the DHBW Heilbronn as the ninth location of the Baden Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW). The DHBW Center for Advances Studies (CAS) also starts on the Bildungscampus in Heilbronn.
With this perspective in mind, provision is made for two additional buildings on the Bildungscampus to grant the AULA a generous conference area, and to house the educational establishment, aim. The second construction phase of the Bildungscampus starts in that same fall.
In order to sharpen the focus on the university locations, the clustering of study programs and faculties get off the ground. Two decisions taken by the Council of Ministers of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg at the end of 2013 set the course: First of all, the Business Sciences of the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences are to be clustered together in future and, secondly, the DHBW Heilbronn which had hitherto been a satellite of the DHBW Mosbach was to become a location in its own right.
The Bildungscampus concept as a modern campus in the middle of Heilbronn is quick to meet and exceed all expectations. By extending the portfolio of courses and qualifications such as the master’s degrees of the Baden Württemberg Cooperative State University or the expansion with the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN), the Bildungscampus reaches its capacity limits just two years later.
This first phase of construction, on an area of approx. 12,000 m², and today called the Bildungscampus Ost, is home to buildings 1 to 5 of the educational campus together with the FORUM events area in addition to teaching, learning and administration rooms. And what is today known as the Parkhaus Ost was built here too.
After a near record-breaking planning and construction phase, the big moment arrived on 30th September, 2011: The Bildungscampus of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation opened its doors. The site begins with the Academy for Innovative Education and Management (aim), the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW), the German School of Management and Law (GGS) as well as communal areas.
The first buildings of the versatile education location in the heart of Heilbronn are nearing completion. 150,000 bricks and 160 tons of basalt were used to build what is known as today’s Bildungscampus Ost.
Following the decision of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation to fund another site of the DHBW Mosbach in Heilbronn, the groundbreaking ceremony for the first construction phase of the Bildungscampus takes place on 5th February, 2010.
