From a vision to reality

The first buildings of the versatile education location in the heart of Heilbronn are nearing completion. 150,000 bricks and 160 tons of basalt were used to build what is known as today’s Bildungscampus Ost.

2011

Opening of Bildungscampus Ost

After a near record-breaking planning and construction phase, the big moment arrives on 30th September, 2011: The Bildungscampus of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation opens its doors. The site begins with the Academy for Innovative Education and Management (aim), the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW), the German School of Management and Law (GGS) as well as communal areas.

Learning and teaching in the heart of Heilbronn

This first phase of construction, on an area of approx. 12,000 m², and today called the Bildungscampus Ost, is home to buildings 1 to 5 of the educational campus together with the FORUM events area in addition to teaching, learning and administration rooms. And what is today known as the Parkhaus Ost was built here too.

Taking a leap to the next chapter

The Bildungscampus concept as a modern campus in the middle of Heilbronn is quick to meet and exceed all expectations. By extending the portfolio of courses and qualifications such as the master’s degrees of the Baden Württemberg Cooperative State University or the expansion with the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN), the Bildungscampus reaches its capacity limits just two years later.

2013

Heilbronn as an educational location gains in importance

In order to sharpen the focus on the university locations, the clustering of study programs and faculties get off the ground. Two decisions taken by the Council of Ministers of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg at the end of 2013 set the course: First of all, the Business Sciences of the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences are to be clustered together in future and, secondly, the DHBW Heilbronn which had hitherto been a satellite of the DHBW Mosbach was to become a location in its own right.

Expansion beyond the railroad tracks

With this perspective in mind, provision is made for two additional buildings on the Bildungscampus to grant the AULA a generous conference area, and to house the educational establishment, aim. The second construction phase of the Bildungscampus starts in that same fall.

2014

The educational spectrum widens constantly

Whilst the construction works proceed, the decisions of the previous year become official: On 1st July, 2014, the Minister for Education, Theresia Bauer, officially proclaims the DHBW Heilbronn as the ninth location of the Baden Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW). The DHBW Center for Advances Studies (CAS) also starts on the Bildungscampus in Heilbronn.

The first relocations become necessary

Even the capacity of the 'old' canteen, which could cater for 380 meals a day, is no longer sufficient. Therefore, the FORUM is used as an interim extension of the canteen. As a result of growth, another relocation starts: The Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Heilbronn (DHBW HN) moves into the aim building, and aim relocates to the newly erected Bildungscampus 7 in the Gaswerkstraße. The new location for the Auditorium (AULA) is the emerging Bildungscampus Mitte.

2015

Bildungscampus Mitte is opened

On 30th September, the first part of today’s Bildungscampus Mitte is formally inaugurated by the Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann. The site now extends beyond the railroad tracks thanks to the AULA and aim buildings.

Event locations for education, art and business

The City of Heilbronn is enriched by the AULA, a state-of-the-art event and conference center. More than 500 seats on over 1,500 square meters offer floor space for specialist congresses, events for those studying or for show events.

2016

The Bildungscampus is extended to include the North sector

A good year later, on 25th October, the next inauguration is celebrated: The first buildings of the third construction phase are opened by the Minister for Education, Theresia Bauer. The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN) as well as the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Heilbronn (DHBW HN) Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) move into buildings 12 and 13 in today’s Bildungscampus Nord. The infrastructure also follows suit and the Parkhaus Mitte finds its home on the site.

2017

The Heilbronn campus connects – and is connected

In June, 2017, the campus bridge measuring 125 meters in length and weighing 280 tons is finished. It spans over the railroad tracks and connects the Campus Ost with the Campus Mitte and Campus Nord. In addition, another chapter begins for the Campus as an educational location: negotiations between the Dieter Schwarz Foundation and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), School of Management prove successful.

2018

New Campus parties are welcomed

In October, the Technical University of Munich is the first university to move into the Bildungscampus Heilbronn. The awarding of the title of “University City of Heilbronn” follows shortly afterwards at the beginning of 2020. The Campus Founders – as the entrepreneurship and innovation center initiated by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation – now also enriches the Campus.

Additional buildings for the Campus Mitte and Campus Nord emerge

Simultaneously demolitions and new constructions make headway. About 11,000 square meters of gross surface area housing 80 rooms and numerous lecture rooms are built at Bildungscampus 9 alone. 153,000 bricks are used in the construction.

Bildungscampus is allocated its own administration company.

Simultaneously, the rapid growth of the educational establishments in terms of the numbers of students and buildings makes ever-increasing challenges on the hitherto de-central building and administration coordination. As such, a new company is founded: The Schwarz Campus Service (SCS) is responsible for all services related to the construction, operation and administration of the real estate and of the event locations.

2019

There just has to be a 'tower building' too

On 31st January, the 'tower building' is inaugurated on the Bildungscampus. In addition to the lecture and seminar rooms of the Technical University of Munich, the building provides urgently needed office space. The Dieter Schwarz Foundation as well as the SCS can also be found at Bildungscampus 9. The central information desk and reception are located on the ground floor.

A boost for research and educational training

In May 2019, the Campus also welcomes the Research and Innovation Center for Cognitive Service Systems (KODIS) of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO); in November 2019, the Ferdinand-Steinbeis-Institute follows. Two powerful research units which immediately grant the field of science a place of importance on the Campus. In the fall, the Erzieherakademie Heilbronn (Academy for Early Childhood Educators) joins the educational family on the Campus too.

460 meters of book shelving need their rightful place

In October, the North Educational Campus, together with buildings 14, 15 and 17 are officially inaugurated. The LIV Library deserves a special mention; it is unique both architecturally and owing to cooperation with various universities nationwide.

Inconspicuous on the outside, spectacular on the inside

The new canteen complements the Bildungscampus Mitte and is an absolute eye-catcher: Although positioned in the center of the Bildungscampus, Bildungscampus 8 is an architectural highlight screened by two landscaped mounds.

Daylight floods into the dining room through very generous glass facades at the entrance - and via a fully-glazed, deep-set inner courtyard. With seating for over 500, the capacity of the previous canteen is almost doubled.

The Bildungscampus is constantly on the move

The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences (HHN) moved into the last buildings on the Campus Nord this year. Meanwhile a colorful procession made its way along the Campus Mitte in the fall: After a very sporty rebuilding phase, the first school beginners carrying their school cones were greeted on the Campus. The Josef-Schwarz Schule is granted interim premises here. And the construction vehicles are back in action towards the turn of the year: The new domain of the Campus Founders is under construction at Bildungscampus 11. The same goes for the Innovationsfabrik in the Weipertstraße which is to be turned into the Coding School, 42 Heilbronn.
